17 migrants found in rental van

A man attempted to smuggle 17 migrants through a US Border Patrol checkpoint using a rental truck, according to an arrest affidavit.

Kyle Nevin Holmes has been arrested and charged with transportation, attempted transportation and conspiracy to transport migrants.

Holmes arrived at the Interstate 35 checkpoint in a white truck around 11:20 a.m. on March 22. Holmes looked nervous. A U.S. Border Patrol K-9 unit reportedly alerted to possible contraband inside the vehicle. Officers referred Holmes for secondary inspection.

Officers cut the lock on the trailer doors and discovered 17 migrants inside. All came from Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala. Holmes and the migrants underwent a medical examination and were given personal protective equipment before being taken into custody.

In a post-arrest interview, Homes said three men approached him and offered him $5,000 to drive a truck from Laredo to San Antonio. Holmes claimed he did not know there were people inside the box truck.
