Ikonisys signs a contract and launches research activities with Politecnico Di Milano, a world-leading public science and technology university in the field of informatics and bioengineering

PARIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Regulatory news:

Ikonisys SA (Paris:ALIKO) (ISIN Code: FR00140048X2 / Mnemonic: ALIKO), a company specializing in the early and precise detection of cancer with a unique fully automated solution for medical diagnostic laboratories and the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (DEIB) of Polytechnic of Milan (POLIMI), a world-class scientific institution committed to cutting-edge research, training and technology transfer, announced the signing of a research contract and the launch of a project addressing the difficult problem of identification of specific cells in complex tissues through the design, training and deployment of a deep learning model capable of detecting them.

POLIMI is a world leader in informatics and bioengineering and recently ranked 1st in Italy and 13and in the world for engineering in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022.

Professor Giacomo Boracchi from DEIB will lead the research bringing his expertise in image processing and machine learning. In particular, the approach will aim to recognize clinically relevant cells of specific types in darkfield images of lung tissue acquired from the Ikoniscope20. Segmentation of single-cell nuclei is a frequent challenge in microscopy image processing, often being the first step in many quantitative data analysis pipelines.

The ongoing collaboration will allow Ikonisys to further enhance its advanced image analysis capabilities and accelerate the development of the Ikoniscope AI project with the implementation of deep learning models and new state-of-the-art techniques in the instrument workflow, leading to the development of new applications or the improvement of existing ones, especially in the most challenging areas such as circulating tumor cells.

Teacher. Giacomo Boracchi, Politecnico di Milano DEIBcommented, “Have been excited about the opportunity to work with Ikonisys on a challenging topic like detecting nuclei in tissue samples, which is a good fit with our expertise in image processing and machine learning. Systematic collaborations with the industrial sector are of strategic importance for the DEIB and, as several previous projects have demonstrated, they often lead to impactful industrial results.

Dr Michael Kilpatrick, Scientific Director of Ikonisysadded, “We are delighted to work with a world-class institution such as the DEIB of the Politecnico di Milano. The opportunity to use their cutting-edge expertise in AI and machine learning to develop new methods for identifying and analyzing clinically relevant cells provides Ikonisys with the opportunity to continue improving its skills in image analysis. This will both enhance the capabilities of the Ikoniscope20 for fully automated diagnostic analysis and expand the company’s product portfolio by increasing the number and detail of tissues for which applications can be developed. “

About Politecnico di Milano

Politecnico di Milano is a public science and technology university that trains engineers, architects and industrial designers. The University has always focused on the quality and innovation of its teaching and research, developing a fruitful relationship with the business world and productive through experimental research and technology transfer. Research has always been linked to didactics and it is a priority commitment that has allowed Politecnico Milano to obtain high quality results at the international level to join the university to the business world. Research constitutes a path parallel to that formed by cooperation and alliances with the industrial system. Knowing the world in which you will be working is an essential requirement for student training. By referring to the needs of the industrial world and public administration, research is facilitated to take new paths and meet the need for constant and rapid innovation. The alliance with the industrial world, often favored by the Fondazione Politecnico and by the consortia to which Politecnico belongs, allows the university to follow the vocation of the territories in which it operates and to be a stimulus for their development.

About DEIB

The Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria (DEIB) aims to be a world-class scientific institution committed to cutting-edge research, education and technology transfer in the fields of computer science and engineering, electronics, electrical engineering, systems and control, telecommunications and bioengineering.

DEIB’s vision is to promote the quality and impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on society at the national and international level, by pursuing excellent long-term and interdisciplinary research and engaging in innovation, technology transfer and education. While it is not easy to predict the future use of information, the next decade will certainly see even more dramatic changes as ICTs find new ways to permeate people’s lives. In this scenario, the DEIB rests on four solid pillars:

  • a tradition of excellence in fundamental research, with a clear vision of its role and its mission to “invent the future”;

  • a growing commitment to interdisciplinary research, as required by the ubiquitous presence of information technologies in all fields of science and technology;

  • a commitment to teaching in the challenging context of a rapidly changing discipline, balancing stable fundamentals with tumultuous shifts in models, languages, technologies and standards;

  • a commitment to applied research and the transfer of technology and knowledge, through joint research projects with local and international industry and through numerous spin-off activities.
