Myrlynette “Kaui” Alo Palau, the building caretaker known for leaving roses on co-workers’ desks, has been honored as Employee of the Month for December 2021 by Maui Economic Opportunity.
This is Alo Palau’s fourth employee of the month award since joining MEO in 2002.
“There are a lot of unsung heroes among us doing their own thing quietly and humbly,” said Janeth Cerizo, who named Alo Palau for the price. “For the most part they keep a low profile and are content to be. But every once in a while they should also be recognized for the contribution they make to our working lives.
Alo Palau is given the master key to the Wailuku offices and welcomes colleagues as soon as they arrive at work in the morning. She makes sure the building is cleaned and maintained. Since the start of the pandemic, she has also been responsible for disinfecting surfaces.
“She really is a team player,” Cerizo said. “She shows empathy and respect not only for the staff, but also for the customers who come through MEO’s doors. In other words, all of MEO’s core values, it embodies them all.
For being named Employee of the Month, Alo Palau won a check for $150 and an extra vacation day. Cerizo received $50 as proposer.
