MMC chief gherao traders for inaction against illegal business activities

Warn to take the law into their hands if no action is taken by Monday

MARGAO: Restless traders in the new Margao market have warned against doing justice themselves if the Margao City Council (MMC) does not take action against illegal business activities in and around Margao, such as traders said Friday President Lyndon Pereira.

Several traders marched towards the municipality and criticized the president for his inaction against illegal businesses in the commercial city, although he raised the issue on several occasions. However, the civic body assured them that action would be taken from Saturday.

On Friday morning, a morcha led by Vinod Shirodkar, president of the New Market Association, walked to the municipality and gherao the president. They lambasted the council for its inaction against illegal business activity, primarily on the trails and in and around the new market. Traders even criticized the civic body for not paying serious attention to issues relating to cleanliness and repair work in the market.

Speaking to reporters, Shirodkar said the city council cares the least about the cleanliness of the market.

“We can notice garbage everywhere and unsanitary conditions in the market. The issue of a shed has also been pending for many years. There are several other issues that are not taken care of by the civic body, despite the exhortations, ”he said. .

Vinod further warned that they would take the law into their hands against illegal business activities if the civic body did not act by Monday.

However, Pereira assured that action will be taken against illegal sellers from Saturday same.

“The traders demanded the elimination of all illegal vendors selling fruit and other goods on the trail. They claimed that New Market’s business had been severely affected due to illegal business activities outside the market,” said the president.

He further informed that the instruction had already been given to the market inspector to launch the campaign against illegal business activities.

The president also admitted that workers engaged in taking action against illegal business activities were not doing their jobs properly.

“We will reshuffle the workers engaged in the market areas. I will pass a note to the general manager on the matter,” he added.
