Presentation of the 3 new affinity groups of SWE for FY22
SWE Affinity Groups are a great opportunity to build community, share best practices, and empower like-minded people. As the network of Affinity Groups grows, there are opportunities for SWE members around the world to join the community, voice their opinions and advance diversity initiatives within SWE. .
Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Affinity Groups (AGs) are communities of individuals who share similar interests and goals. These groups help build community, provide professional development opportunities, and empower and celebrate women of different life paths.
Affinity groups for diversity, equity and inclusion generally align with categories protected under a US federal anti-discrimination law. These affinity groups focus on the needs of social minority populations and develop tailored programs to serve their respective communities.
the Business affinity and interest groups are grassroots communities focused on social and networking opportunities around common interests. The focus of these affinity groups is loosely focused on the business environment and member experiences.
In Fiscal Year (FY) 2021, three new Affinity Groups were approved under the Business and Interest Affinity Groups. SWE is proud to welcome:
- the affinity group of professionals at the start of their careers,
- the community college affinity group and
- the Technical Career Track Affinity Group.
During this first year, these new affinity groups will build their community, establish their leadership teams, and refine their mission and goals. Now is the perfect time to get involved.

The Early Career Professionals Affinity Group (ECP AG) was formed to bridge the gap between college and professional SWE and equip individuals with the support, resources and an inclusive community to excel in the first ten years of their careers. . The mission of the Affinity group is to assist in the recruitment and development of early career professionals, and to facilitate their engagement and participation in the Company. By providing a forum for networking, professional development, and opportunities to promote diversity of thought, ECP AG aims to empower early-career professionals with the means to achieve professional and personal success. Community College Affinity Group
The Community Colleges Affinity Group promotes and connects women from community colleges in engineering, engineering technologies and related STEM fields and raises awareness of their unique challenges and their diverse contributions and perspectives, within SWE and beyond.
Community Colleges AG is aligned with SWE’s core values ââof an inclusive environment and mutual support. They will support SWE’s strategic advocacy goals throughout the engineering pipeline for all women, regardless of their non-traditional STEM background or background. Community Colleges AG will support students of community colleges specializing in engineering, engineering technologies, pre-engineering and related STEM fields, as well as the faculty, administrators and staff who teach, recruit and advise them. Areas of opportunity for this GA include expanding access to mentors, providing members with resources and materials, and raising the voice of community college women in engineering and STEM fields. , as well as the voice of their advocates.
Beth McGinnis-Cavanaugh and Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua are delighted to be the first co-leaders of this affinity group. For more information, contact [email protected]
Technical career path affinity group
The Technical Career Track Affinity Group focuses on supporting or planning growth throughout a technical career as technical leaders. The aim of this group is to promote women to excel on the technical leadership path and to expand engagement in SWE technical awards.
The core values ââof SWE related to professional excellence and mutual support are the essence of this GA. This GA will focus on technical leadership advocacy and recognition of roles such as Technical Director (CTO), Technical Researcher (TF), Subject Matter Experts (SME), Chief Engineer (CE), System Architect (SA) and technical director (TD) who have limited access. The leaders of this AG recognize that not all organizations provide the pipeline and structure to encourage and support female engineers on their technical career path. SWE and this AG can help fill this gap by providing individuals and organizations with toolkits to advocate for technical career progression. Enanga Fale and Linda Freeman are delighted to be the first co-leaders of this affinity group. For more information, contact [email protected]
